Postconcussion syndrome, a common complication of pediatric traumatic brain injury, causes daily headaches, memory loss, somnolence and dizziness or vertigo.

Introduction

Headaches represent some of the most common problems encountered by primary care practitioners and neurologists. As many as 50% of adolescents report occasional headaches, and 8–15% of adolescents, or more, have migraine. Moreover, 1 in every 100 children (1%) under the age of 5 years also has headaches, usually migraines. Headaches cause considerable worry for parents and physicians. Although brain tumors certainly cause headaches, the vast majority of headaches in childhood or adolescence are not the result of tumors or other life-threatening conditions. This section focuses on two main categories of headaches: migraine, a common disorder producing intermittent headaches, and chronic daily headaches, a disorder that causes daily pain lasting weeks, months and sometimes, years. The material also describes several other headache syndromes that can affect children and adolescents.
